"Taiwan is known for 2 things..." I was waiting for bubble tea... ☠️
TSMC single-handedly propping up Taiwan.
They also make all the best mass produced bike frames.
Crazy they have no Oil, but they managed to develop a key resource.
My takeaway after watching the video, Taiwan: Suffering from Success
Even if AI crashed, the world will still need microchip and electronics.
It is ironic that Taiwan"s semiconductor industry is dependent on specialized manufacturing equipment supplied from.... the Dutch.
And the funny thing is that those Taiwanese chips are manufactured by EUV etching machines made by ASML... a Dutch company.
0:10 Taiwanese companies you didn't know that are Taiwanese: Acer, Asus, BenQ, Cha Time, DingTF, D-Link, Evergreen Marine/Corp, FoxConn, Garmin, Giant bikes, Gong Cha, HTC, Merida bikes... to name a few
Here I was, secretly hoping that you would work the beetlenut industry into this😂
The military does NOT use the latest chips. In fact they are usually 2 - 3 generations behind. What the military needs is ruggedness, so the chips they get are packaged, coated etc. so they can withstand g - forces, dirt, etc.
lol before I clicked on this video I thought people from the Netherlands came to Taiwan and gave them an unfamiliar disease nicknamed the “Dutch disease” 😂😂
6:10 the chart actually shows the TWD depreciating against the dollar here
6:10 The chart shows twd depriciate.
Even if TSMC fades, they have a highly skilled workforce that could pivot to other goods. No society ever failed from having too many engineers.
Calling semiconductors a “Dutch Disease” driver is conceptually sloppy. One is about passive resource windfalls distorting an economy; the other is about an innovation-driven, capital-intensive industry that typically strengthens economic complexity rather than undermines it.
The currency in Taiwan hasn't appriciated for decades precisely because the currency is being controlled by the Taiwan Central Bank. As amazing as the semi-conductor industry is in Taiwan, the richest people in Taiwan are actually real estate developers (land owners), not tech moguls. When i went to school in the US in the 90's, the exchange rate was close to 27 NTD to 1 USD. The current exchange rate is 31 NTD to 1 USD, so it has actually gotten weaker, not stronger.
Thanks for the great video! Taiwanese here, I gotta say the struggle's real like a drug addiction. Our stock market value just surpassed UK, becoming the 7th largest. More and more citizens are switching to stocks & ETFs of semiconductor and its supply chain industry. Most of Taiwanese, as well as the gov, are fully aware of the risk of supporting whole nation with one pillar but none of us can stop ourselves making profit or investment out of them......
It’s wild to see the gap between the TSMC salaries and the median income. It really shows how a 'booming' GDP doesn't always reflect the reality for the average citizen on the ground.
I'm 10min in and he still hasn't started talking about "Why Taiwan makes almost all of the world's semiconductors"
