I upgraded (yes it is a huge upgrade) from Roku Ultra to Apple TV 4K 2 years ago, and you couldn't pay me to go back. I can also speak about recent experience as we still have 1 Roku Ultra in use here at the house (my wife isn't good with change.) She constantly has to reboot the Roku to correct this issue or that issue, and frequently calls on me to "fix" what a reboot won't take care of. It's sluggish in comparison, it has the worst home screen w/ads you cannot get rid of, it fails to launch apps regularly, etc. etc. etc. Meanwhile, our main TV has the Apple TV 4k running flawlessly with no need to constantly be rebooted. It acts as the "hub" for our home security cameras on top of handling streaming, and provides us with camera notifications while we are on the go. To compare the 2 isn't even close to fair, since the Roku Ultra "feels" like a multi generation downgrade in every way.
NVIDIA Shield , getting a hold of one in 2026 isn't a fun endeavor but nothings come close

I have Roku ultras for both of my LG TVs. One TV is about a decade old and the other one is about five. Both of them are fully CEC compatible. There’s two things you have to do though. One is you have to make sure that you are in a HDMI port that does support it because not all TVs and ports do. And then second is you have to activate the CEC through the TV itself. Because you need the TV remote to be the controller and then enact inputs on the Roku. So if you just try to set it up through the Roku. You’re treating the Roku like it’s the dominating input. I use my LG magic remote to control my Roku my LG TV, my Blu-ray Sony player as well as my sound bar, which is Vizio. One remote to rule them all. At least on LG they make it very simple and on set up/top boxes Roku is literally an option and so the pairing is very fast, efficient and simple.
I have a Roku Ultra, Xbox, and Playstation on my main TV. I do not have cable. I never touch my TV remote. I use the Roku remote to turn on the TV which automatically goes to the Roku HDMI input. If I want to play the Xbox or PS I turn on that controller and the TV swaps inputs. After I turn off the console I use the Roku remote to go back to that input to make life easier for the spouse. I have no complaints.
I have a google tv 1080 p for my old tv. It can even turn on the tv, change source and volume. Using the google remote. No need for a second remote
I have a Mac and iPhones so went with Apple TV. No regrets. Stream my home media using plex server. Have not noticed any issues with subtitles
What I love about Rokus is the Private Listening feature. My wife and I have a small place, and being able to watch the TV with headphones has kept us from switching to Apple TV
Try the Shield TV. I've had it for 8 years. I know, is sad that they never made a newer model, but it's still amazing for anybody with a NAS with 4K movies. No regrets.

outside of apple tv the ONN 4k streaming box is pretty awesome.
