Monster Waves: Caught in an Apocalyptic Storm | 4K Documentary

In the lab you can recreate the wind waves and current but what they can't is the ocean floor topography. I believe that's one of the causes of rougue waves.

I served on the USS Midway in the early 80s, 60,000 ton aircraft carrier. We were hit once by rogue wave in the middle of the night unexpectedly. Everyone on board was awaken. It felt like we hit another ship much louder than the typical catapult displacement launching 60,000 pound aircraft the next morning we saw the starboard side cat walks solid steel bent up at 45° angle and some of the cat walks completely torn off and missing! That was in the North Pacific. Near Japan. Water is powerful. 800 times more dense than air.

Interesting documentary but adding a correction. It is well known that waves can reach over 30 meters but in all probability will have no recording device available in that area. Although there have been eyewitnesses to such occurances, you're only listing recorded events. There have been devices destroyed because they could not record waves over a certain hight. I'm a very old hen duck and love water..but admire all those who choose their way of life on the ocean. Fair winds and following seas.

My name is Joe I was work on a offshore supply vessel in the oil fields off the coast of Texas usa in the gulf of Mexico and while standing watch was hit with a monster wave .the vessel suffered a lot of damage knocked out the wheel house windows flooded in inside this happened in 1978.i really enjoyed watching your video on monster waves thank you

What I particularly loved was when the wave Researcher was talking about how much FUN 😊😁😊 he had about doing his kind of investigations! Because even though my particular field of work is no doubt different from this, I definitely feel his passion for the work 😂😂😂🎉😊😊! Because, if you don't have that love of the game, you can't get up with the excitement of desire to penetrate the mysteries of the universe and find out what causes these things to happen! I, could never get tired of looking deeper in my field of work, because I am able to enter what is called the " flow state." So, this type of thing is the premier experience in life!

My grandad was doing the arctic convoys during the war and he said green waves are the scariest.He was on the bridge of one of the escort vessel and he was looking at a wave that was as high as the bridge was and he said to me he thought he wasn't coming home. It's not just a giant wall of water its a vast trough on the back side of the wave that the bow of the boat is nose diving into and may not be coming back up

One time, in the Philippines, my ex and I had to wait a few days for the waves to die down before we could return to the mainland from an island off the Pacific with it directly to our East…and nothing in between…when we got in the small fishing boat to return, I’d never seen such waves - I’d guess 12-15 ft swells - but those bamboo arm things worked…we were a couple feet in the open from them …they were justtt long enough too to catch the next swell….those rural Fishermen guides are amazing 🤍

I'm 74...Back in 1973, I was a QM on USS John F Kennedy when we went thru a hurricane in the N Atlantic...All aircraft were either down in the hanger deck or strapped down at the tail end of the flightdeck........We never heard the term, "monster wave" back then...All our escort vessels, (small boys) turned around and fled around the northern tip of Scotland.....I was on the helm and we went thru some giant waves rolling us 10 or so degrees, ( a lot for a 100K ton carrier)..A couple waves came over the bow and reached back, splashing the front of the island, a distance of some 480ft.......

Wow what an interesting documentary - have heard of these crazy waves but to actually have persons survive these is even more amazing. Mother Nature and Poseidon don't play around anymore
