Most likely Hypomagnasemia, also known as Grass Tetany, or Grass Staggers. It happens to cows when their Magnesium levels fall too low. Thats why we feed minerals ad lib, or in their feed. Then they will have been attacked by foxes, badgers etc, in the UK, and more predators in the USA. Ive seen cows die over night, and by morning the nose, ears, teats and rear end have all been consumed. No blood spilt either.

Just recall in 1977, the town of Colares in Pará, Brazil. They experienced a wave of alleged UFO attacks known locally as chupa-chupa ("sucker-sucker"). They were attacked and drained of their blood in various amounts. Some people survived, and some people died. If you look at the evidence, it all adds up to centuries of this type of harvesting.
