Visit the blacksmith next to the inn (he's hidden in a cubby hole) and reinforce your weapon of choice (Or Armor) Its easy to find iron/copper ore / timber if you do the townspeople quests on the notice board. You start at ~10dmg I got mine to +20dmg and absolutely hammered that Matthias Knight Guy.
Another big one is L1 with the lantern turned on shows, the locations of fast travel zones, artifacts and artifact puzzles from far away.

FYI - Completing most all the bounties get you ( Thieves Gloves ) you can put on and steal anything in the world in broad daylight without criminal charges, once every 30 mins they charge again.
I recommend keeping the recipes and crafting books you use. You can give them to some shopkeepers as gifts to boost your trust with them
Also, you can fast travel to the abyss artifacts you find from doing puzzles. Or the ones in the little stone pillar you find.

Before doing anything, buy mask. Then go to the bank, take the door on the left. And wait on the door to close. Steal everything and sell it, you'll get 50+ and if you do it before you do all the rep quests the loss won't matter.
You can also give your recipes to Dahlia in Hernard (as gifts, not selling them) and she'll add those recipes to her menu for you to buy later.
