The $20,000 home robot is designed for chores like folding laundry and tidying up, and the company hopes it will eventually assist with elder care. Unlike most competitors, 1X manufactures motors, batteries, and electronics in-house, a vertical integration strategy aimed at faster iteration and insulation from geopolitical supply chain risks. The humanoid market is currently dominated by Chinese firms, which accounted for the majority of the roughly 13,000 units shipped worldwide last year, making 1X's US manufacturing push a notable counterweight. However, the company is openly acknowledging current limits: humans still perform most factory assembly, and NEO relies on remote human teleoperators to complete complex household tasks, with that data used to train its AI toward eventual full autonomy.

You spend $20k to have some random stranger somewhere around the world that's paid minimum wage to walk around your house remotely? No thanks. I think AI robotics will be useful one day, once they get all the motions figured out and can do chores effectively, but that's not today.
Seems like they would be good for military use too.
Could i operate my own robot remotely? Let's suppose, I am in a wheelchair - I could assist myself in many tasks. Or I am on vacation abroad - I could water my plants. Or feed my cat. Or just walk around to be "present". The AI is needed to do the actual movements, but I am in control Taking aside the massive security questions here....
