Panthalassa, a Portland-based startup, has raised $140 million in Series B funding at a valuation near $1 billion. The company is developing floating, wave-powered platforms that run AI inference workloads at sea. Each 85-meter lollipop-shaped node features a buoyant spherical head atop a long submerged tube, with no engines, hinges, or gearboxes that could fail in harsh ocean conditions. As waves pass, the node bobs up and down, driving oscillating flow through internal turbines to generate electricity onsite. Cold seawater cools the servers, and data transmits back to shore via low-Earth-orbit satellites. Beyond powering AI compute, Panthalassa sees the open ocean as a planetary-scale energy resource capable of delivering tens of terawatts of clean power, alongside solar and nuclear. Commercial deployments are targeted for 2027.

Unlimited cooling is untrue. Put enough servers in the ocean, in a geographically constrained space, and that will ensure the marine ecosystem is damaged beyond repair as a result of the heat dissipating from the servers.. Would love for someone to tell me I'm wrong. Not an expert here.

Why not use data center heat to desalinate salt water? Seems like a win win.
Unfortunately, wave-power alone won't generate enough power. A few years ago, similar company tried similar products to desalinate sea water, didn't work due to lack of reliable continuous wave action.

I have to wonder about jurisdiction here. Compute platforms in international waters, no clear legal framework. What could go wrong.
Why not put data centres on space? On a geo-stationary orbit. Use a sheild to block sunlight, like they do in that satelite which captures images far more accurately than hubble and sits on a geo-synchronous orbit.
