Meta 8000 Employee Layoffs - AI Isn't Causing This

As a software/application engineer who always took low prestige, low pay roles, I feel like everyone is gloating as our whole industry is put out of work, after a few influencers decided to be obnoxious telling everyone that it was all 300k salaries and casually coding from the beach. It was average office wages and a lot of pressure and off hours responsibility, from home primarily to juggle in doctor appointments and accommodate injuries. Now everyone is like "learn to weld or lay roofs", as though we are all healthy 20-somethings with good backs and joints, and no chronic health conditions coming from a lifetime in the US.

Yeah, they fire people 'cause of AI', then transfer the same jobs to Eastern Europe and Asia xDD

AI is an excuse, not the cause of job losses and cuts.

If these companies were fairly accessing their workforce they'd lay off all their C-suites and suits too, they are more useless and expensive than all the people they are laying off.

A lot of there companies that do mass lay offs just start functioning like shit. Go ahead and call the social security office. It wasn’t like this pre 2025. So they do need the employees in some cases because the service takes a giant hit they just don’t care about the customer experience anymore. You can also bet the people left behind are now overwhelmed.

Nobody really needs Facebook or Instagram.

Your government spent decades de-regulating and gutting labor laws to please their donor companies whose only priority is market value or profits. In short you did it to yourselves!

They hired all the people so the competition couldn't.. simple. Companies are being bought for their engineers, the true value.

As a former “Tech” Staffer I can confirm Eli is indeed speaking the truth. You need to pivot or do your own thing ASAP. There is 0 security in “Tech” Employment. Stay aware.

Many companies are hiring back trough service companies in India. Of course they do not talk about that. They brand this as "AI makes us more efficient"

how it works is simple - a product manager says "we need to build this big feature X by Q1 in 2-3 years", and then it turns out you don't have people to build it. Everybody else is already working on something else. So you hire entire departments worth of people. Then you either deliver it, and the feature flops, or the executives change their minds (headcount gets approved by the CFO, CTO, and other execs) and project get shelved or put on pause, so people who were hired were put in limbo, treading water by designing systems that they did not know were put on ice. And then a year or two later the same execs who approved this massive hiring are the ones who decide to cut all those people down. You are just a number on a spreadsheet for them. They have so much money slushing around that they don't mind giving you 6 months of salary and all the insurance when letting you go. Zuck burnt 80 billion on stuff nobody wanted, and everything is fine. That itself should tell you how disconnected these people are.
