They not only breach the water surface...they leave the ocean entirely. I knew they are quick and strong, but those jumps are impressive. Seals are fast and flexible. This is wow.

Man feels like just yesterday me and my bro/roommate were stoned af watching this in college. He had the Planet Earth DVD set and we watched all of them 10x over. This was one of our favorite moments 20 years, sheesh

It made me think about how survival in the wild is such a constant, high-stakes balance, especially in a place like this. I’ve always loved seals, so seeing them in that kind of danger hits differently, even though I understand it’s nature. The way the shark relies on surprise and speed is fascinating, though—it’s like a perfectly evolved hunter. Do the seals ever change their route or behavior to try to avoid this danger over time?
A great white could leave the surface that high must have sprinted vertically upward very fast.
