Hey universe, I'd like to stop finding out that all of my existing products are being actively enshittified via Louis Rossman videos. Not in a "okay you just won't know then" kind of way, but more like a "stop enshittifying everything I own" kind of way. Please and thank you, universe. And "thanks for all the fish" or something like that.
Car dealership, 6 months later: "Hi, we're here to take the wheels off your car. Here is the detailed article on how it's going to impact it's driving ability"
TrueNAS community editions exists, folks. Don't buy proprietary shit.
Watching Louis is a bit like russian roulette for brands. This is my way of realizing that I can not buy certain products anymore. Each day a new one gets added...
I did not know there was room left for enshitification by Synology. Impressive
clippy no simpy 📎
I have a UGreen NAS and I'm glad the company is young enough to not worry about this for at least 2-3 years........
I have a synology nas that I've been using for about 5 years now. The initial reason I bought it was because of the ease of setting it up, as I was pretty much a networking noob. And it was super easy to setup and configure, basically walking you through everything. Fortunately, I only use mine as a backup drive and plex server, so the features they're now going to charge for I don't use, but the enshittification is absolutely real with synology.
"Nothing should have RGB" thanks
Synology announced the proprietary hard drives while I was shopping for a NAS and was going to choose them. I am so happy I wasn’t a month earlier. I still bought a prebuilt NAS but used a friendlier company (and fb marketplace for the hard drives that synology wouldn’t have allowed)
MBAs in 2026 are just absolutely in love with the 1800s railroad baron business model. Offer tickets at a loss until everyone else runs out of money and you can buy them, then raise the price and keep buying out or using corruption to destroy new competitors. Management culture is cancer. We have to get rid of professional management but I don't see how.
I think Louis is the fastest talker in recorded human history.
NO SYNOLOGY EVER AGAIN! I bought into Synology about 10 or so years ago. I just liked the form factor and they had a decent software suite. It wasn't until one of my disks was kicked out of my array due to an "error". I checked the SMART and there was nothing wrong. I checked from a separate Linux PC and did a full disk wipe, and still no SMART issues. I put it back in my Synology and a couple weeks later it kicked it out again. I contacted Synology and they outright refused to help because my disk was not on their "approved" list (this was before they only allowed Synology branded drives). I put the disk in another array on my Linux PC and it ran fine for years afterwards. I only continue to use my Synology because I own it. But as soon as it stops working or being useful, not touching them ever again.
I'm glad I didn't fall for the prebuilt NAS meme and set up my own system
I just need ubiquiti to stay solid for like a year more before the vultures ruin that as well
Louis!.....js you're the best! keep up what you're doing! Love your videos...
Enshittification will continue until revenue is improved.
"The enshitification shall continue untill morale improves"
Screw Synology and QNAP - just get a decent PC with a lot of drive bays and install TrueNAS or another open-source NAS OS. I had a QNAP fail and my data was hostage until I could get another QNAP to put the drives into to be able to retrieve the data. These NAS vendors will claim to use a standard file-system like ZFS, but still write it in a proprietary way to disk so that there is no access the data unless you are using their over-priced hardware.
Nah Louis, the fundamental problem is that the sales guy wants to sell features, the dev team says yeah we can build that, and admin picks their nose all day instead of actually projecting costs and responding to market forces. They could easily convert active monitoring into a proxied websocket that just directly connects you to the NAS over a secure tunnel, but instead they decided to store terabytes of log files so the UX team could pretend to have real work to do. At no point in the process was the user of any concern past the sale itself, just dozens of people going into work everyday and using their own pet projects to backfill for a lack of vision and coordination. And of course every company gets away with doing it because which one of the hundreds of lies we hear everyday deserve our attention?
