the whole “people are asking longer questions” thing is because people are genuinely forgetting how to google. i remember as a kid using the internet for the first time, my parents told me i wasn’t finding anything because my question was too long or wordy. so i should use key words and not phrase my questions like a question. now, i’m having to remind them of that because they are trying to search up full paragraphs. and then say, “well chat gpt/grock/whatever the hell would answer it fine.” or “no, look, it answered the question,” referring to the ai result. people are genuinely getting dumber.

I work in the public sector and a very VERY big problem we've been having is the AI overview telling people that reside within the service area of my place of employment (think city, county services) INCORRECT information about certain services we provide. Like events we host, locations and times and said events, what service is provided, and who is eligible. Even long standing ongoing services are being impacted. Think libraries and waste drop-off services. Like it will tell people they can drop off certain things to our recycling facility WHEN THEY ABSOLUTELY ARE NOT THINGS WE TAKE. It's insane. I've done so much educating for people who call angrily because the search engine AI told them something incorrect. And apparently other departments are having the same problem. We might have to do a more organized communications campaign to tell people to go to our website or just call us for the correct information.

I keep trying to put specific terms in quotes, which used to make it search precisely for a phrase. Now it just... ignores it. Google searches should NOT look like "can I please have the weather in new york today?", they should be "weather new york". What on EARTH are these CEOs thinking, Google's entire company rests on the utility of its search engine! It's like cutting the legs off the chair you're sitting on!

duckduckgo is actually... pretty good, & you can turn off the AI features with ease. The only thing is it doesn't use your location (which I kind of like actually) so if you're looking up a restaurant or something, throw in the name of your town to specify.
