The HEPA filter fulfils a vital role, it allows Dyson to sell more HEPA filters.
I suspect the HEPA is there to protect the motor, but honestly, if it reduces fecal particles inevitably blowing everywhere even a little, I'm all for it. 😅
The mesh thing is a high flow muffler

After doing extensive research, I can with confidence report the mesh thing, is definitely a thing. If they had been clipped together it would have been a doohickey.
It seems Dyson is a far more controversial company than I thought. Do you think this is an engineering masterpiece, or excessive overengineering designed to fail?

As a person who has extensively worked with the VL53L5CX (which is the successor of the VL53L3CX Dyson used in this) it is absolutely amazing what is possible with them. That one has a 8x8 resolution and while that sounds abyssmal it's honestly astonishing how much one can do with that little data. I developed a SLAM like algorithm to do indoor mapping with a couple of theses sensors in a 3D-printed mount. The resolution isn't enough to properly identify most objects (even though ST is veeeeery optimistic with their description in particular in that regard including in regards to the reliability of hand gesture detection etc.) but for the intended purpose (helping sight impaired individuals navigate in unfamiliar indoor spaces) it actually worked quite well in testing. We chose to use these tof sensors because even multiple of them use quite a lot less power than even cheap lidars, they do not have ANY moving parts and they are also cheap. Several of them are not as cheap as the cheapest lidars (if the tof sensors are not purchased separately but on some premade boards) but it was a research project to check if it is even possible. Dyson hasn't been a British company for quite some time now. Shortly after Brexit (which James Dyson had strongly promoted) they moved to Singapore.
7:02 the "suspension" is so the contacts move to where the pins are in the rear base - if it was rigidly mounted, the slightest misalignment could cause wear or damage to the contacts, and also affect designed contact pressure for reliable operation.

I love that there's still companies where this type of recursive craft - where every sub-component is designed with care - is valued. That being said, someone forgot the systems thinking aspect: I very much do not want to have all the water from my hands get blown back onto my clothes.
That small capacitance after the rectifier is also to have a good power factor without having an active PFC
My guess is that the baffle plates are the muffler. It absorbs the blade noise.
I suspect the plastic grids are for muffling sound rather than doing any sort of wind alignment.
