Center chanel behind the TV is an actual sin, it's 90% of the sounds on a dialogue heavy movie. Just move it to the console under the TV and prop it up with some random yoga blocks and aim it upwards with furniture pads

In a 5.1 system, what most people consider to be "rear" speakers are actually meant to go on the side of your seated position.
I just love how much of a normal channel this is. Its so down to earth and refreshing.
I just did the same thing recently. I went from a sound bar to a 3.1 system. Then in 2 weeks I had a 5.1.4 system lol
I hope you also got a microphone for setting up the Denon and it's speakers, it is called speaker tuning, meaning that the output of the amps in the surround sound receiver is matching the sound produced at it's best. Denon usually have this in the setup menu. As soon as the speakers are all calibrated, your sound is even better. Not plug and play, measure :).
My two cents are that if you are enjoying your AVR get banana clips for the speaker cables. It makes things easier if you ever want to move or replace speakers
Betty, simple (free) fix for your center. Raise your TV with books or blocks under the TV feet to slide your C speaker forward.
An old friend of mine spoiled me for surround sound 30 years ago and can't imagine a set-up without it. Sounds like you could have done a lot worse dealing with the wild-west marketplace weirdness than you did. Good stuff!
I don't have room in an 1100 square foot house for an elaborate speaker system, but I am currently using a Pioneer VSX-LX301 A/V receiver in a 2.1 configuration connected to my television. Everything else is connected to my receiver so I am able to use the switching function. The Pioneer automatically shuts off unused outputs. It sounds very good for what it is. The Pioneer receiver also has phono input for magnetic cartridge so I am also able to play my vinyl record collection. There is no substitute for separate components well placed.
Denon AV Receiver, and Dayton Audio speakers, and a Goodwill subwoofer. That's what I'm rocking, I love how it looks, and I ADORE how it sounds. Also I spend like maybe 400 bucks.

The next step is AUTO-TUNE with a test mic. There is normally a mic. jack on the front & a test mode to calibrate the speakers. Put the mic where you sit and "auto tume" & bingo everything sounds perfect.

If you have a smaller space a 5.1 setup would be just fine. No need for 4 rear surround speakers

In movies, audio is just as important as the video. Centre speaker in the front will make a huge difference since it does most of the work. Glad you took the step. Now you can see why some of the sets of 2000-3000 used.
