The *truth* about open source

Open source is more like academia is meant to be. You're paid a salary but your research contributions are distributed freely.

Haha, super accurate. Opening a PR is _literally_ me saying, "Fine, jerk. I'll do it myself."

I’m guessing that at least 80% of forks are made out of spite and anger.

so i have t1 diabetes and the system for insulin pumps and glucose sensors, that makes it possible for them to interact and automate so much stuff with algorithms, was only developed because there were open source solutions. people would have to literally hack their pumps before because firms were not doing it. So i'm just really thankful there are amazing people like that in the world.

I know this is meant to be a joke, but this is half of the reason I've ever contributed to open-source projects, bloody missing features I'm putting in or fixing in a frustrated huff. The other half is just a cool feature I want to mess around with implementing that wouldn't fit in my work codebase

Without open and free source software, the technology industry as we know it would never have existed, the fact of having semi-finished products at almost zero cost is what has allowed digitalization to proliferate throughout the world.

I love contributing to open source, idc what you say about it, money is not all for me, if I love something and I have the opportunity to make it better it's beautiful.

reminds me of that guy who got hired as a dev and first day fixes a bug that has been bothering him forever and then put in his 2 weeks notice

To be fair, dealing with your anger by being productive and providing your own solution sounds like a good way to do things. Maybe I should become a developer too

Huh, all my open source contributions have been, "thanks for this useful free thing, let me show my appreciation by adding something I want." I even wrote unit tests when asked...

At first I was like “where is this going” and then the “Anger issues” line caused me to choke on my coffee because it’s so true. 95% of my contributions are me raging about a bug I found or adding a feature I personally need haha. Great skit! 10/10

This feels so true. I've contributed like twice to FOSS, and both times it was "Well thats stupid, Ill fix it myself!"

I’d love to contribute to open source as a full time job. But I don’t live in the socialist democracy of my dreams and I do most of the coding I want to do in my work. When I’m not at work, I have a million other hobbies. Not working for free either.

Hate coding is one of the most beautiful experience I ever had.

I actually appreciate contributions out of frustration because it indicates a level of care and passion for the project, at least enough to go out of their way to do something about it.

I feel this in my bones.

I contributed to OBS fixing how it lists input audio devices in macOS. I gave the clone and build instructions a try on my mac and it compiled and ran successfully. From there, the code was also so well organized finding the delegates to the OS APIs was easy. I fixed 2 other minor bugs on the way. I think better than contributing to an existing project, like I did, is creating software that has ZERO friction to prospective contributors. Reviewer was nice suggesting to split the 3 fixes separately. And yes, I sent it out of pure frustration since my audio device is both inputs and outputs so it took me lots to realize OBS was buggy lol.

i successfully did inception recently for real, talked about an idea I don't want to do like it was a good idea at a tech bro party, 1 week later the dude made it behind my back, only problem is the implementation is bad and now I'm actually going to do it myself
