You've reached the end
Not only 57$ per month plus a ton of hate. I could not stop my tears while reading his story 😭
I guess if people like you talk about these people who made such an impact for free, it could gather more attention for awesome people like Dennis and make fundraising for them
Always use a license such as GPL when “open sourcing” your work.
Sometimes I think copyleft licences like GPL makes sense!!
and "influencers" get "thousands" of dollars... your shallow society right there...
He made a better internet! It would be nice if people who use this supported him more directly but if he made it open source to serve and not to capitalize upon that’s beautiful and respectable. I know respectability doesn’t pay bills on its own, but I’m always pro treating one’s creations as an art to be shared rather than a product and I admire people who aren’t afraid to let their ideas loose.
"Open source is flawed because without revenue it could end up behind a paywall" What nonsense is that ? How can open source software end up behind a paywall ? This is not a flaw of open source software at all
If you are releasing the code for free and as open source in hopes that it would be useful, dont do it expecting payment. You wont get it.
I've seen so many devs get borderline harassment from other devs for working on closed-source personal projects. That stigma helps no one but the massive companies who can ignore the criticism
We just need a popular license for monetizing copy left software. Open source licensing is great and important for the world and corporations but we need a way to monetize and incentivize devs further that doesn't have the complications of figuring out licensing. Something like npms donate feature but for commercializing so it's as easy to pay fractional royalties as it is to manage software dependencies.
This is why you make low maintenance code. Publish and forget it.
The terrible law system in Russia also meant he went to jail
Tbh, I think open source should be paid for companies and free for consumers.
Hey Lewis 😁
Open source is not flawed, capitalism is flawed.
Software is a tough business, we used to sell proprietary software, employed people, paid benefits, and too many companies ripped us off so we had to let everyone go and we lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I'd say writing open-source software may help you get a high paying job!
bro open source should be given importance here instead and foss is different from oss wtf
Is it that open source is flawed or our systems that make it impossible to live comfortably while providing incredible value to those around you
1 copyright later and the whole internet would stop existing
How can Open source be better for maintainers?
