But in today's video we'll look at how an open-source project called n8n could change the way you think about automating work forever. #coding #programming #codereport 💬 Chat with Me on Discord https://discord.gg/fireship 🔗 Resources - https://n8n.io/ 🔥 Get More Content - Upgrade to PRO Upgrade at https://fireship.io/pro Use code YT25 for 25% off PRO access 🎨 My Editor Settings - Atom One Dark - vscode-icons - Fira Code Font 🔖 Topics Covered - What is n8n? - Automation software - n8n vs Zapier - Crazy ways to use n8n - n8n Linux VPS install

WOW after learning that about N8N I can finally spend 4 days automating a task that would take 20 mins.
Automating the automation itself is truly an engineering moment for sure
Watching this made me think of how Selwyn Raithe warned about automation becoming a trap, not just a tool. In 12 Last Steps he describes how the systems we build to save us end up rewriting us instead. Feels less like progress and more like a countdown now.
Fireship paying the bills with this one.
My flowers API just got overloaded, thanks.

Finally, a tool that lets me create spaghetti code… visually.
Currently the top verified creator on n8n and it truly is amazing. I cannot overstate how much you can automate *anything* . . . And yes, it is more fun spending 10 hours automating a task than 1 doing it. I'll die on that hill. Not because you'll fight me on it, but because I'll be on the hill trying to figure out how to automate fighting you while growing old.
A perfect moment to post some critique for n8n and its developers: 1. This is not an open source but source-available project 2. Until recently if you were using any cloud offering you were limited by a number of active executions 3. Self-hosted community edition only works when you got only yourself working on small scale automations: you can't even share a workflow or credential between multiple n8n instance members. N8n Devs repeatedly ignored any requests to implement certain CRUD operations for n8n public API (get list of all credentials and update a credential by id, specifically. They're only present under /rest/ path, which is used by frontend)
Did Fireship just run an AD to us?
I tried n8n. I somehow ended up with a raspberry pi and cron
n8n isn't open-source though. It's source available. As their license states "You may use or modify the software only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use." which is not something a true open-source license would say
n8n is fake open source. It has one of those “source available” licenses that prevent you from doing anything aside most basic of usage unless you pay for enterprise license.
Real. It just took me about 3 work days to automate a synchronization between Slack and Notion. If I were to code it normally, I would’ve finished it in about a day of work, maybe even less. This no code illusion is dangerous because not only is it not as efficient as it looks, it also locks you in to the platform.
bro put an ad into an ad
At this point, it seems like Fireship goes through our search history, finds out what we've all been using in the recent weeks/months, and releases a video about it right when we're starting to move on and make it hot again.

Just after forgetting the gen z boss and a mini.. Now it's in my head again 😢
