Cut the crappy music

You can do everything in c. It might take you 100 years but you can do it. For operating systems, you should be interacting with hardware as close as possible.

C generates clean and predictable assembly code, which makes it ideal for low-level programming.

Good. But Torvalds also accepted Rust in the linux kernel, so I think he changed his mind. I freaking love this man!

This was in 2008, at that time Rust was a little private side project of Graydon Hoare that nobody knew about yet.

C was created to write the machine-independent portions of operating system kernels, specifically UNIX. It's also used for BSD. What's not in C is assembly.

C is the undisputed goat there is no language that balances simplicity and control so well

Core C compiler is very simple to implement or port from other platform, and there are relatively few possibility for catastrophic failures. Modern C++ is way more complex, and most other languages generate C metacode during compilation. You could say that C is lingua franca for multiple hardware platforms.

Imagine that 50 years of code, codebases, programming languages etc... are based on C in the end of the day. Do you think it will ever change? If C stopped existing tomorrow, I guess 99% of software/os/programming languages and more would also ”stop existing”

C is the boss

Zig would be my choice today. Agree with him still, C is hard to beat in this respect, but would not pick Rust either for it.

When I was programming device drivers in C, I could visualize the resultant machine code. Doubtful you could do that in Rust or even C++

idk why people call C hard. Man I'm having a hard time learning JS but C seems nice & I got the basics + some intermediate stuff really easily

I started programming when I was 10. By 14 I was reverse engineering software, injecting my own libraries through the Windows API into my game processes, and by 16 I was producing keygens for commercial software. Today I'm 33, and yet, I acknowledge there's always someone better than you. Linus is at least 5 times the programmer I am. I love him.

As a self-taught C Programmer that practically knows A->Z of all Computing, I think most 'Programmers' doesn't fully grasp the meaning of 'C is everywhere' and for what I know, in consequence to what Linus Torvalds meant with 'I have yet to see a language that comes even close to C in that respect'.. And hence throw the pun of "Why don't you write it in assembly?". Assembly is a Human Readable syntax for Machine Code, this is why you can't actually say 'Oh it's in Assembly' and must specify the Architecture and even Architecture Version. C is a Human Readable syntax for Assembly the same way Assembly is a Human Readable syntax for Machine code.. But now, you do not have to worry about the Architecture and can actually do proper work. You use Assembly to not worry about Binary specifics, you use C to not have to worry about Architecture specifics.. You use Rust to not have to worry about Memory Order and you use something alike Python to not have to worry about Programming and hence, Python is a Coding Language - You configure requirements instead of instructing operations..

New languages have come along and matured in this space since the time of this video, like Rust. And more yet are being built, like Mojo. I still use C.

Don't know if someone cares but the music name is Untitled 13 probably the ultra slowed version but not sure.
