#cave #caving #nuttyputty #johnjones On November 24th, 2009. John, his brother Josh, and 11 friends and family would go into Nutty Putty cave located west of Utah Lake. It was supposed to be a relaxing excursion into a new cave. What proceeded to happen next would turn out to be one of the most extensive rescue attempts in caving history. This video covers the (in)famous story of John Edward Jones and the Nutty Putty cave. John crawled into a tunnel in the cave and was upside down for 28 hours. I go over the accident, rescue attempt and aftermath of what happened. Can’t imagine anything more horrific than crawling voluntarily into your own upside down grave. Heartbreaking
There are places that are just not meant to be explored. I don’t understand how some people find a tight, dirty and low oxygen cave like the nutty putty appealing. A place where you’d risk cutting your self, injuring your bones and head and possibly dying.
The story is devastating. John made a huge mistake that I'm sure that he replayed so many times while being upside down, thinking of all the things that he could have done different, all the things that lead him to this moment, all the doubts he ignored, from leaving his family home to return to Utah, right up until that final exhale to squeeze into his final position. Maybe if he hadn't exhaled to push further on and had called for help at that point he would have been saved? I'm sure he asked himself these questions and billion times. I can't imagine that moment realising that he will never get to see the beautiful scenery up at surface level. How beautiful the world is and all the things he loves that he must have known he would never see again. He had a whole life waiting for him at the top. It's truly heart wrenching. That feeling of hopelessness stuck in that small space with only your mind with all these questions as why am I here? I wouldn't find myself in a position such as this because I do not find anything enjoyable about it. But if by some twist of fate I did find myself there, I would hope they would administer enough heroin through my leg that I could leave this body in some kind of peace. It bothers me that he is still down there. Knowing how badly he wanted to get out. RIP John.
I'm not an experienced caver by any means, but the moment you have to breathe in to squeeze through a crevice is when I'm turning back 🤷🏾♂️
Do you think the cave should've been sealed?
I can’t believe after somebody went in there and died, people got mad when they said nobody else is going in there and they closed it off.
He had 27 hours or replay what he did wrong he suffered enough and paid the ultimate price rest in peace John jones. That cave should have been sealed after the first time someone got stuck imo
Why anyone would try to squeeze thru tight cave tunnels is beyond me
People squeezing through those stone passages deep underground are literally crazy, no other explanation.
I've heard this story so many times and it still gives me anxiety.
Basically every claustrophobia’s worst nightmare
This guy literally crawled in his own casket, I don’t understand why he thought this was a good idea. He had everything going for himself…
Why anyone would put themselves in this type of situation is beyond me.
I cannot imagine the trauma. I am really scared to my bones. I would have said shoot me please.
I became obsessed with this story. I put myself in his shoes. They should have blocked off that undiscovered path entrance. So no one could attempt it. The county dropped the ball on that one. Horrible for his family. Horrible way to die
Ok.. I'm 8 mins in and I feel claustrophobic while lying on my bed watching this video...this is freaking scary...ok back to the video..
The most terrifying and horrific few hours of this poor man's life is totally unimaginable,. ...how these people have the nerve and sheer bravery to do this is beyond my comprehension.....May he Rip
I was once in a cave that got tight enough that I had to lay down and skoot through but it was wide enough to turn around and even that was too much lol. i cant imagine going that far into a space that tight. Honestly it gives me anxiety just thinking about it.
this is a "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" situation but its still very sad at the same time
There's a HUGE difference between lasting/surviving 27 hours upside down and going through pure torture for that length of time! This dude went through straight torture!!!
