The strid absolutely does have a 100% death rate. There have been people who jumped in with lifejackets and flotation devices and they ALL died and most were never found as the river flows underground in a tunnel system that nobody knows. Creeeepy
The biggest threat with the Strid is that it looks so small, charming, harmless and sylvan - a bubbling, dashing stream among mossy boulders; but it's utterly 100% fatal.

The largest Marburg outbreak resulted in 374 human infections in Angola in 2004-05, and had a 90 percent death rate. 329 died. Scary shit. We shouldn't be allowing people into an area with the presence of a disease this deadly. And we still don't have a full grasp on how it transmits.

I know it'll probably never happen since it would serve no purpose except satisfying curiosity, but I really wish they would one day temporarily divert the river Wharfe so the Strid could be properly investigated and mapped.
The Stridd does not "suck under". One of the factors that makes it such a dangerous body of water is that the water is aerated by the strong current splashing over the rocks. This makes the water less dense than one might expect, meaning any body submerged in it is much less bouyant than in normal waters. If you fall in, you will sink. No ifs, buts or maybes. It does not matter if you wear a life vest or how well you can swim. You will sink, period.
I've been to the Bolton Strid several times as a child and the danger of it was hammered into me by my parents before we even set off. I'm 50 years old now and would still not go anywhere near the edge, it's just not worth the risk.

Bats are infamous disease carriers. They commonly carry rabies in many places. Bats have unusually high body temperature due to their very high metabolism. This allows them to act as hosts for pathogens without becoming symptomatic.
small inaccuracy at 4:16. Viruses can not breed or multiple outside living cells. Microbes or Diseases would be a better word choice as it includes bacteria and fungi which can breed and multiply in guano.

The Strid was local to me growing up and its dangers frightened me as a kid - especially when I heard about Lynn and Barry; my grandmother would tell me about them and use it as a warning not to go near. The area is scenic and beautiful but The Strid always has an eerie feeling in the back of my mind. Amazed to hear about it from Scary Interesting!
