The man who literally wrote the book on cave diving, Sheck Exley, died cave diving. That's enough for me to never do it.

Major respect to the people who went partway in, realized they were in over their heads, and left to go swim with fish. Too many people die preventable deaths because they let bravado go to their head and push past their limits.

Imagine going through a super traumatic event where your friend is found with a knife in his chest and the police are talking to you and are like “do you have any fear of KNIVES or BLOOD or similar things?” Or whatever they asked and you getting stressed by the questions enough to be taken into custody

Underwater cave diving seems terrifying enough without adding more to it!

There is no amount of money that you could pay me to make a dive like this, or go in to caves like the Nutty Putty. These deaths represent my worst fear - trapped, disoriented in a tight, confined, dark space while lost with no way out. Absolutely horrifying.

Wow , an officer with training and a dive team still managed to die in a recovery operation , that should tell you all you need to know about how dangerous that cave is

Diving into an underwater cave is roughly equivalent to being the guy in horror films that goes down into the dark basement to investigate the strange sounds coming from it.

Weird. The second you said he was found with a knife in his chest my mind immediately went to “he ran out of air and ended his suffering quickly on his own.” I didn’t even consider murder. 😅

Well this was completely avoidable, but at least there weren't any malicious outside factors, and they at least were able to recover the bodies unlike that horrible Nutty Putty Caves accident you covered.

Cave ones are always frightening especially when you remember what happened to John Jones you're in such a confined space as well so that when a disaster happens it gives you less chance of escape.

I've been scuba diving for 10 years, but even then I will NEVER go cave diving. Experienced or not, the idea of getting lost in a confined space underwater and knowing you only have so much air is terrifying. I can't imagine how that man felt having searched for the exit, knowing his time was running short, and deciding taking his own life by stabbing himself was a better way to go.

wow. again. for some reason the narrator's voice works perfectly to build my anxiety. his Nutty Putty Cave doc is damn terrifying. something about the clear, calm, relaxed way he tells the stories just makes me panic. Now a heart from our immeasurably talented creator.....that's AWESOME!!!! 😃

1st rule in diving: You never dive alone. And that guy decided that was a good idea to dive alone, during night, in an unfamiliar cave system. I feel more sorry for the police diver who died searching for him.

Based on everything you said this sounds very much a case of Nitrogen Narcosis sometimes called dive drunkenness. Basically a high amount of Nitrogen gets dissolved in the blood, due to the high pressures involved when going below 20 metres but can happen on shallower dives. This can lead to feelings of excitement almost like you are drunk. On one dive, a girl in the group saw a fish and removed her respirator to give the fish some air. The instructor was able to hold the respirator in her mouth and help her ascend a few metres which helps with the symptoms. Simply, once affected, the person in question can do some really really bizarre and stupid things. The bends is essentially the nitrogen in the blood returning to gas form and getting trapped in the body which is why when ascending, you need to do so slowly and if deep enough, stop for rest periods Normally when diving you try to have a distinct descend period then remain at that level then ascend. Saw tooth dive profiles are to be avoided as best as possible (I know cave diving it isn't entirely possible) but that profile before his demise was alarming. Doing multiple dives a day isn't recommended (There are charts and formulas you should use to plan dives in great detail including rest periods between going diving again) Even if he made it to the surface, there is a chance he could still be in danger for some time after exiting the water
