Best used of this technique is in a 80s soviet movie called "come and see" but please don't watch "come and see"

There's an interesting scene in Toy Story 3 where they simulate a split diopter shot when two characters are having a conversation. IIRC they even simulate the distortion that happens at the edges of the split. Very cool to do since you don't actually have to do that for an animated film

That explains the blurry edge I've noticed in some movies

40 years ago I bought me a Cokin set. Still use it occasionally. One of the filters was a 'half close-up' lens..... Didn't have to ruin my goggles.

There is a neat moment in Toy Story 4 where they make the same effect but digitally. It’s very interesting if you look up the scene with the doll when she is in the cupboard room. I can’t tell you exactly where or when it happens, but it does and it’s very neat to see in a movie that doesn’t even use lenses.
