So, the big day finally arrived, and my daughter officially started primary school here in China alongside her older brother! No matter how many people tell me we’ve made the wrong decision by sending our kids to a Chinese school, I stand by the choice my wife and I have made. We’ve thought long and hard about what’s best for them, and I genuinely believe that, overall, growing up and studying here at the local primary school in my wife’s hometown in Fuxin, northeast China, is the right path for our family. It certainly won’t always be easy, and I’m sure there’ll be challenges along the way, but for now, I’m incredibly excited to see where this next chapter takes us!

As a mixed kid myself, I think it is best for your kids to study in Chinese systems until end of primary school (as they train discipline and manners). But please do consider Isaac and Millie for an international high school (either in china, boarding school or directly within UK for its curriculum for example) because then they will have the best of both worlds. If they choose to go back to china, they can always still go, if they choose to explore other countries, the a levels they hold will open many many doors for them. This worked super well in my case. I think you’re wife might be the best judge, she went through the Chinese school system herself, she knows Millie and Isaac, and ithink she’s studied in the UK? So she might have most informed view on whether its right for the kids or not

How is it a "massive mistake"? Millie and Isaac will be academically 3 years AHEAD of their counterparts in the West by the time they finish middle school!
Aww I love how happy she was to find she was in a class with her friend. Also I think they will have a nice balance because, while the Chinese school system is stricter (good & bad), their home life will be more relaxed as you two are relatively modern parents.

I believe you are doing a great job. When we visited China we were greatly impressed with the way that children were taught respect for their school, their teachers, for the elderly and even the security people at the schools. I say WELL DONE! Australia needs to lift their game with teaching respect.

So I’m a teacher in China but I’m from the UK and also taught in Korea before this. I would be very careful about checking your child’s understanding of what they are learning. A lot of schools especially in east Asia due to parental pressures basically spoon feed kids and produce what seems amazing work . But usually there is a teacher correcting everything and rushing because of such pressure. I think in China kids get to be in a safer environment but even in international schools you’d be amazed how much of core curriculum and educational values are overlooked and not taught in order to impress parents. Of course this isn’t all schools and every country has problems otherwise why would I move to teach in China. I just wanted to share a teachers perspective of some behind the scenes.
My three foreign children went to school in Japan. It was the best decision we made. When we eventually returned to our home country they were so far ahead academically and as far as social skills were concerned

I will only say one thing millie will stand a much better chance of education than in the uk with so many overcrowded classrooms.

Sending kids to school are never a mistake. No matter how small or big or in rural or in the city. What is the most important is the family that support them physically, mentally, and wellbeing of the children. It will all work out in the end. 😊
