It was getting his ass handed to him and appreciating his ''elder''. Its one of the few things veterans appreciate.
Its was the humbleness that won them over.

I WAS AT THIS MATCH FRONT ROW RING SIDE DALLAS SPORTATORIUM
The fact he accepted what Brody did back to him with no complaints whatsoever made all the difference.
