Never fear...you got this! I have refurbished 5 houses, all older than 50 years old, the oldest two nearly 100 years old. You'll be so happy, feeling proud and accomplished when you solve these problems. I have peed (and pooped) in temporary set-ups, so I'm feeling for ya. Anyway, what I really wanted to say is...at least you've got a ton of youtube content that people will be interested in.

At least an 80 yr old house was built well. New construction is very shoddy these days. I have a family member who's brand new home has walls cracking and separating from windows and an improperly graded or not properly compacted foundation. Septic issues aren't fun, but truly just a minor setback on the budget not the nightmares of your home crumbling around you. You'll get through this. Blessings and good health🙏

For anyone new to septic or visiting a place with septic: 💮 Never flush ANYTHING besides what exits your body and toilet paper. NEVER! 💮 Buy the toilet paper that won't clog your pipes. 💮 Don't put any cooking grease down your drains. (You can drain it when cooled into an empty sour cream container, etc. Wipe the pan with a paper towel and put that in with the grease/oil. Just don't let it in your septic.) 💮 Don't put coconut oil down your drains. If you oil pull for your teeth, spit it outside. 💮 No condoms, used feminine products or their applicators, baby wipes, flushable wipes, diapers, etc down the toilet. And, I shouldn't have to say it, no paper towels!!! I wish everyone success with their plumbing.
Get yourself a five gallon bucket and a pool noodle for emergencies!😂

Ok. I'm in Florida, but I have relatives up north (Ohio) and I've been told that the ground freezes and you cannot dig in the winter. If that is correct, I'm glad this didn't happen in the dead if winter when you'd have to wait for spring to get it fixed.

Have had multiple houses with septic. Most important rule.. don't flush any paper product - including anything labeled "flushable" - down your toilet other than toilet paper and even with that, be careful. Some toilet papers break up much easier than others. Here in Wisconsin it's state law that privately owned septics have to be inspected/pumped every three years. Inspecting is cheapest, we paid $85. If all looks good, you can bypass the pumping until the following 3 years, but then it must be done. I'm trying to remember - I believe we paid $285 the last time we had it pumped. Even at that, it's much cheaper than a repair and is helpful to have the heads up to any problem that is developing. ~Kathy

Be sure you add a box of Rid-X every month. It's pretty cheap and helps keep your septic tank working well.
Just to make you feel better hopefully, we had a similar septic problem on the 2nd day in our new house. It got fixed and we haven't had another problem in 20 years. Knock on wood!
