Now that's how you teach young Man how to hustle honestly, it reminds me of me when I was about 8 years old, in the summertime when School was out, me, and my best friend Terry Screws would go door to door, asking Neighbors if there was anything we could do for them to make some money. We washed windows, painted, raked leaves, and cut yards. Back then there were no gas powered lawnmower, or edgers we had a push mower, where the blades go round in a circle, and the edger was on a stick that pushed also. You imagine how hard that was. But we wanted money in our pockets. A candy bar was 5¢, and a bag of chips, soda was a dime each. 25¢ and you were in heaven. My favorite chips were Laura Sutter BBQ, a Butter-Nut candy, and a Strawberry Soda Pop.

The reality is that someone dropped the ball. As a black Septuagenerian Baby Boomer, we always had to do chores at home. But, if we needed money we did "outside chores". I was weeding my grandmother's garden when I was 4, for a nickel. By the time I was 6, I was weeding gardens of neighbors and friends. I also ran errands, and anyone could stop me in the middle of playing, and send me to the store. By the time I was 8, I was cutting grass, and at ten I was babysitting. At 12, I was doing all those things plus cleaning basements and attics. When I was 15 we had to go to the Cotillian. All of the boys paid for their own tuxedos, and Corsage's for their dates. We pooled our money and hired limousines to take us. A Cotillian requires many years of learning manners and etiquette, including dancing the Waltz. We took it very seriously, even though we were just "regular kids" we were trained to know how to act and speak in any company. That was part of "black culture". Good manners in "mixed" company (adults present), good work ethic all the time, andthe need to be smarter, stronger, and better than our counterparts. IMHO, we need to pick that ball up again. This ragamuffin, laissez-faire, attitude towards raising our black youth ain't gettin' it.
